BLOOD ORANGE is a Liverpool-based, queer, feminist zine.
Foreword to issue 5:
Working-class people are disproportionately involved and represented in the arts, with less than 1 in 10 in the arts coming from working-class backgrounds. It's significantly harder to break into these industries as a working-class person and even pursuing higher education (with only 20% of Russell Group undergraduates being working class) can't guarantee a career in the arts.
We want to explore growing up working-class, family and traditions, working-class food, and working-class fashion. We want to discuss class across cultures, to celebrate community, and to face the barriers that social class creates head-on. we want to talk about classism in the arts and the misrepresentation and underrepresentation of the working class in mainstream media and pop culture. We want to represent the diversity of experiences within a shared identity, and to talk about the ways that social class intersects with gender, race and sexuality. This theme is about growing, existing and belonging.
